November is National Diabetes month. With more than 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK, this is one day where we can raise awareness for this modern day condition.
Our focus is to look at how lifestyle and our own energy flows can make diabetes less intrusive in our day to day life.
First, let’s look at what diabetes is.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition where your blood glucose level is too high.
There are broadly two types of diabetes:
Type 1 requires daily administration of artificial insulin by means of injection or insulin pump.
Type 2 is more generally managed by a combination of dietary control and medication in the form of tablets.
What Causes Diabetes?
What all types of diabetes have in common is that they cause people to have too much glucose (sugar) in their blood. But we all need some glucose, this is what gives us our energy. We get glucose when our bodies break down the carbohydrates that we eat or drink. And that glucose is released into our blood.
We also need a hormone called insulin. It’s made by our pancreas, and it’s insulin that allows the glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our bodies.
If you don’t have diabetes, your pancreas senses when glucose has entered your bloodstream and releases the right amount of insulin, so the glucose can get into your cells. But if you have diabetes, this system doesn’t work.
Common Symptoms of Diabetes
Frequently going to the toilet, especially at night.
Being really thirsty.
Feeling more tired than usual.
Losing weight without trying to.
Genital itching or thrush.
Cuts and wounds take longer to heal.
Energy and Diabetes
There is currently no cure for diabetes. However, there are treatments and lifestyle changes that can make a big difference.

Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight are very important for managing diabetes. Being overweight makes diabetes control difficult because it can lead to insulin resistance, making it hard for your body to use insulin properly.
You should follow a healthy diet, you need to know how foods affect your blood sugar levels. It's not only the type of food you eat but also how much you eat and the combinations of food types you eat.
