“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” Mahatma Gandhi
This may seem like an usual topic to cover in a blog on energy, but if we look at what can disrupt our energy flow and stop us thinking clearly, we saw an ideal opportunity to reflect on this topic.
What is forgiveness?
Forgiveness is generally defined as a conscious decision to stop feeling resentful or revengeful towards a person(s) who has wounded you in any way.
To forgive means to forgo your retribution or to let go of your hurt and hatred. There is a simple reason for this. Hatred is a very negative emotion that drains our energy. When you have negative thoughts about others, your body creates negative chemistry that will ultimately damage your body.
How does forgiveness affect us?
We are by nature good-hearted, generous and compassionate. This promotes a smooth flow of our own ‘human energy’. However when we are full of negative thoughts, judgements and criticisms about others, or ourselves, we obstruct this natural flow of energy, create blockages and prevent our bodies from renewing our human energy, which can lead to ill health.
Similarly, maintaining negative attachments to the past can also stop us moving forward. Indeed they act like elastic bands pulling us back and stopping us progressing.
Forgiveness can give us peace of mind. The act of forgiveness itself involves letting go of deeply held negatives feelings. By doing so you can be empowered to recognize the pain you suffered without letting that pain define you, enabling you to heal and move on with your life.
Why is forgiveness so hard to achieve?
A huge stumbling block seems to be that in forgiving we become confused with the idea that we are condoning behaviours that we know were wrong. That we are, in some way saying that what that person did, however bad, was ok. But forgiveness does not mean forgetting, excusing, condoning actions nor does it always mean reconciling with the person(s) who has harmed, it is about giving yourself permission to let go and set yourself free.
Do you have anyone that you need to forgive? You don’t need to speak with them, just think about releasing yourself of all negative energy you may be holding on to.
Let go by practising mindfulness
At Jung Shim, we run classes to introduce mindfulness and meditation. The classes are based on eastern principles that promote mindfulness and good health through a steady flow and healthy store of human energy (Qi), which maintains the balance of mind, body and spirit.
